CommBank Personal Loans: Fit, Joint Loans and Offers
Is a CommBank personal loan right for your client? Compare fixed and variable options, joint applications, redraw and what an accepted offer means.

A CommBank personal loan suits a client who wants fixed repayment certainty or variable repayments with access to redraw. Both unsecured options can fund a vehicle, renovations or debt consolidation. As at October 2026, the choice depends on repayment flexibility, total cost and the client’s ability to meet CommBank’s credit criteria.
An existing account can simplify the application, but it doesn’t secure approval. For a car purchase, compare secured finance as well as the unsecured loan before recommending a product.
Fixed or Variable: Matching the Loan to the Purpose
Choose fixed for a predictable repayment commitment and variable when extra repayments and redraw matter more. As at October 2026, CommBank’s unsecured fixed and variable personal loans both cover $4,000 to $50,000 over one to seven years.
| Feature | Unsecured Fixed Rate Personal Loan | Unsecured Variable Rate Personal Loan |
|---|---|---|
| Repayment certainty | Fixed rate during the agreed fixed period | Repayments can change with the rate |
| Extra repayments | Allowed, with an early payout adjustment possible | Unlimited additional repayments without an additional repayment fee |
| Redraw | Extra repayments cannot be redrawn | Available funds can be redrawn, subject to conditions |
| Suitable purpose | A known renovation bill, car purchase or consolidation balance | The same purposes, with flexibility to pay ahead and access available redraw |
CommBank’s fixed loan terms allow extra repayments. Full repayment with at least 12 months remaining can trigger an Early Repayment Adjustment if the bank reasonably expects a loss or administrative cost. The variable loan has fee-free extra repayments and redraw, but its required repayments can change.
Both currently have a $15 monthly service fee. The usual $250 establishment fee is waived when the client both applies and funds the unsecured loan between 18 August and 9 October 2026. A funding delay beyond that window changes the comparison.
Compare the Same Car and Term
Secured car finance elsewhere costs less when its total interest and fees are lower over the same borrowing amount and repayment period. Include any balloon payment, broker fee and required insurance cost. Security also gives the lender rights over the car if repayments fail, as Moneysmart explains.
In a hypothetical comparison, both loans fund the same $25,000 car over 60 months, with no balloon. The unsecured quote totals $32,700 in repayments and fees, while the secured quote totals $30,800. The secured loan saves $1,900, provided it meets the client’s ownership and early payout needs.
Those figures are invented examples, not CommBank prices or lender quotes. CommBank also has its own secured car loan, so compare that option before treating an unsecured loan as its only vehicle product.
Joint Applications and Existing Customers
A CommBank joint personal loan makes each borrower responsible for the full debt. CommBank’s 4 August 2025 personal loan contract permits the bank to ask either borrower for the full amount owing. If one partner stops paying, the other still owes the outstanding debt under the contract.
Prepare both applicants’ income evidence, existing commitments and living expenses. Include shared expenses once and identify each person’s separate debts. A second income can help affordability, but a second applicant’s commitments or adverse credit history can also affect the assessment.
The bank must assess whether the loan meets the borrowers’ requirements and whether they can repay without substantial hardship. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission’s responsible lending guidance explains the enquiries and verification behind that assessment.
As at October 2026, an existing customer can use NetBank details to start the direct application. CommBank may request income evidence if salary isn’t paid into a CommBank account. Existing banking doesn’t remove the credit checks or the need to declare debts elsewhere.
Use the client’s direct CommBank application route. Help prepare the information and compare the product without describing a mortgage broker’s lodgement system as a personal loan channel.
For ongoing repayments, CommBank’s joint loan instructions require both borrowers’ online consent to change a direct debit amount or frequency. Both need NetBank or the app, or they can visit a branch.
Redraw, Refinancing and Early Payout
CommBank variable personal loan redraw lets the client transfer available extra repayments back to a transaction account. As at October 2026, the loan management guide directs clients to the available redraw balance in NetBank or the CommBank app.
The available amount can exclude money needed for the next minimum monthly repayment and uncleared cheques. Available redraw can reduce over the loan term until it reaches zero. A payment shown before its direct debit clears can also be reversed if the debit fails.
In a hypothetical example, a client pays $2,000 ahead but the app shows only $1,700 available. They can request the displayed amount, subject to the account’s conditions. Redrawing $1,000 adds that amount back to the loan balance and increases the debt on which interest accrues.
Redraw isn’t a new loan approval or a permanent savings balance. CommBank can restrict it under the contract, including when the account is in default. Extra repayments on a fixed loan remain unavailable for redraw.
Compare a Refinance After Fees
Obtain a payout figure valid for the intended settlement date before comparing a replacement loan. A statement balance can omit accrued interest and an early payout adjustment. For an existing CommBank loan, the client can generate a payout figure in NetBank or the app.
CommBank’s contract exempts loan accounts opened before 5 August 2024 from the Early Repayment Adjustment. For a later fixed loan, include any adjustment shown in the payout quote before calculating a refinance saving.
Compare the existing loan’s remaining repayments with the replacement loan’s total repayments and all switching costs. Include the old lender’s payout charges, the new loan’s establishment and service fees, and any broker fee. Moneysmart’s refinancing guidance warns that a longer term can increase total interest despite a smaller instalment.
A CommBank refinance makes sense when the total saving survives those costs and the new repayment commitment suits the client. If the purpose is consolidating debt, document which facilities will be paid out and whether their limits will be closed. For vehicle debt, use the car loan refinancing guide to prepare the payout and security-release checks.
What an Accepted Offer Means
Accepting a CommBank personal loan contract confirms the client’s agreement to its offered terms, but verification can still come before funding. As at October 2026, CommBank’s application and funding instructions describe additional document requests after contract acceptance.
Keep the stages separate when explaining an application status to your client.
- An indicative rate or repayment estimate helps compare options. It doesn’t establish that the application is approved.
- A loan offer sets out the amount and contract terms for the client to consider. Any requested evidence still needs to be supplied.
- After the client accepts, CommBank can request documents through the app or NetBank. An accepted offer alone doesn’t mean money has reached the nominated account.
- Once verification is complete and the loan is approved, CommBank pays the funds into the nominated account. Confirm the deposit before the client spends the money.
The 4 August 2025 contract says the contract starts when CommBank funds the loan or otherwise accepts the client’s offer in the Schedule. Read that Schedule with the terms before the client accepts. It sets the repayment obligation and any special conditions.
Prepare the Evidence Before Acceptance
As at October 2026, CommBank’s document guide sets different income evidence routes by employment type. Prepare the documents that match the applicant.
| Evidence | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| Identity and residency | Driver’s licence or passport for a new customer, with visa details where required |
| Full-time or part-time employee income | Two recent consecutive payslips, or another accepted income evidence route |
| Casual income | Three months of payslips or salary credits, or the guide’s other accepted evidence |
| Self-employed income | Recent personal tax return or notice of assessment, after at least 12 months in business |
| Existing debts | Recent debt statements showing account details, repayments or credit limits |
| A secured car purchase | The requested purchase invoice, registration and insurance evidence |
For multiple self-employed income sources, CommBank requests the tax return. Check that every income document shows the client’s name and that the dates cover the required period. Missing debt statements, gaps in payslips or incomplete vehicle evidence can leave verification unfinished.
When Another Lender Suits Better
Choose another lender when its assessment accepts the client’s circumstances or its product meets a requirement CommBank’s option doesn’t. As at October 2026, CommBank requires regular income, a good credit rating and eligibility outside the bankruptcy process.
CommBank’s decline guidance identifies missed repayments, defaults, excessive credit applications and an unaffordable debt position as possible reasons for refusal. A thin credit file needs assessment. It isn’t the same as adverse credit, and limited history alone doesn’t establish an automatic decline.
Casual or uneven income also needs evidence, rather than an assumption of rejection. CommBank lists casual income document routes. A self-employed client with less than 12 months in business cannot rely on that income under its published document rule.
Match the alternative to the actual problem before lodging another application.
- For a suitable vehicle, compare secured asset finance lenders on the car and the client’s credit position. Lower total cost can justify using a different lender.
- For documented self-employed income, compare non-bank personal lenders’ evidence requirements. As at October 2026, MoneyPlace’s verification guide requests tax returns and personal bank statements showing business income paid to the applicant.
- For credit issues, approach a specialist non-bank lender for a policy assessment before a full application. A lender’s willingness to assess the case doesn’t establish approval or an affordable outcome.
- For fixed repayments with anticipated early payout, compare products without an early exit charge. As at October 2026, Liberty’s unsecured personal loan lists no early repayment or early termination fee, although establishment and other charges can apply.
Use the personal loan lender comparison to build the broader shortlist. Record the client’s purpose, affordable repayments and preferred term alongside the selected product’s total cost. Keep the alternatives considered and the reason each was less suitable in the credit file.
If the client’s next step is a mortgage, assess the personal loan commitment alongside the proposed home loan. The CommBank home loan policy guide addresses that separate lending decision. Finish the personal loan comparison with a written reason tied to this client’s requirements, not their existing bank relationship.
