Choosing a Mortgage Broker Course in 2026
Choosing a mortgage broker course? Compare recognised qualifications, delivery, fees and practical support before enrolling in an Australian programme.

Choose a mortgage broker course that awards the qualification your intended pathway needs and gives you enough support to finish its assessments. Kaplan suits self-directed online study with regular tutor sessions. AAMC’s virtual classes suit new entrants who want scheduled teaching, while REAA suits students comfortable organising their own practical role plays.
A Technical and Further Education (TAFE) course can suit students who want a campus-based option, but its actual intake decides availability and delivery. Compare the qualification first, then the teaching and completion conditions. A short workshop and a nationally recognised broker certificate have different outcomes.
Choose the Qualification Level
For mortgage broking, start by comparing the FNS40821 Certificate IV in Finance and Mortgage Broking with the FNS50322 Diploma of Finance and Mortgage Broking Management. Both codes are current on the national training register as at October 2026.
The FNS40821 qualification has 12 units, including seven core units. The FNS50322 diploma has 15 units, including ten core units. Providers group units into subjects differently, so a course with one subject can still cover the complete Certificate IV.
The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) sets a Certificate IV minimum for representatives providing third-party home loan credit assistance. The Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia (MFAA) has a diploma requirement. Its qualification guidance allows Certificate IV holders to join with a requirement to complete the diploma within 12 months to renew membership.
Choose the diploma if that is the qualification your intended membership or brokerage requires. If the Certificate IV meets your starting pathway, compare its standalone cost with a direct diploma or a later upgrade. A finance broker course aimed at another lending activity needs the same qualification check before you assume it prepares you for residential mortgage broking.
Prior Study Can Change the Course You Need
Credit transfer recognises units you have already completed. Recognition of prior learning (RPL) assesses evidence of skills gained through work or other learning. Banking experience can support an RPL application, but it doesn’t automatically award the mortgage-broking qualification.
An existing FNS40821 holder can use Kaplan’s diploma upgrade with credit for the first subject. Older certificates can need gap training. AAMC also has diploma upgrade and RPL pathways, with eligibility assessed from the previous qualification and experience.
Use the provider’s registered training organisation (RTO) number to match its legal identity on training.gov.au. The exact qualification must be on its scope of registration. An introductory workshop, completion certificate or sales course cannot substitute for the complete qualification just because its name includes mortgage broking.
Compare Providers Fairly
Compare providers on the qualification awarded, teaching format, practical assessment and support available before the enrolment deadline. These course options suit different study needs.
| Provider and RTO number | Qualification options | Delivery and practical work | Best fit and drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kaplan Professional, 90116 | FNS40821 and FNS50322, including a diploma upgrade | Online study with quizzes, written case work and oral assessment. Certificate IV tutor sessions run fortnightly. | Self-directed students wanting regular opportunities to ask questions. Assignments still need time outside tutor sessions. |
| AAMC Training Group, 51428 | FNS40821 and FNS50322, including upgrade and RPL pathways | Self-paced online or virtual classes. Written work and recorded skills demonstrations remain part of assessment. | New entrants wanting scheduled teaching, or experienced applicants seeking RPL. Live classes require daytime availability. |
| Real Estate Academy Australia (REAA), 32426 | FNS40821 and FNS50322, including a diploma upgrade | Self-paced online study, written tasks and video role plays, with trainer messaging. | Students comfortable arranging practical recordings. Assisted role-play sessions are an extra purchase. |
| TAFE NSW, 90003 | FNS40821 and FNS50322 course listings | Theory and practical coursework. The selected intake determines timetable and delivery. | Students wanting a TAFE pathway when a suitable intake opens. Its Certificate IV page currently displays no study or location options. |
Match the Teaching to Your Week
Kaplan’s Certificate IV suits students who can study independently and use scheduled tutor sessions for questions. Its assessment includes written and oral assignments as well as quizzes. Its diploma has monthly tutor sessions and a direct-entry route, so a new entrant can compare that route with completing the Certificate IV first.
AAMC’s Certificate IV has an eight-month enrolment period. The virtual option includes three teaching days, with assessments completed after class. AAMC requires an adult participant for recorded role plays.
Choose the virtual option when guided teaching matters and you can attend during the working day.
REAA’s Certificate IV has a maximum 26-week completion period and trainer messaging. You can arrange role plays with another person or purchase assisted sessions. This suits an organised independent learner, but the recording and submission work still falls to you.
The TAFE NSW Certificate IV listing describes practical loan-application work and recognition of previous study or experience. It currently has no displayed intake. A TAFE brand or course listing alone doesn’t establish an available classroom place, fee or timetable.
Free Training and Licence-Course Claims
A free mortgage broker course can be an introductory webinar, sample lesson or subsidised qualification. The enrolment outcome distinguishes them. A sample teaches a limited topic, while a qualification requires completion of the full set of assessed units.
TAFE NSW lists reduced-fee options, which doesn’t mean every applicant receives a free course. Funded training depends on the programme and your eligibility. Compare the qualification awarded and any remaining costs for materials or extra services.
A course advertised as a mortgage broker licence course supplies training. Credit authority comes through a credit licence or an authorised representative arrangement. Finishing FNS40821 doesn’t itself authorise you to give clients credit assistance.
Calculate Time and Total Cost
Calculate mortgage broker course cost from tuition plus the extra services and additional enrolment time your study plan needs. Use Australian-dollar fees for the same qualification and delivery option. Add reassessment charges, extension fees and any practical-session costs before comparing totals.
As at October 2026, Kaplan lists its Certificate IV at $380 and direct-entry diploma at $750, both exempt from goods and services tax (GST). Its eligible Certificate IV-to-diploma upgrade is $380. The diploma enrolment options therefore let a new entrant compare direct entry with two separate enrolments.
AAMC lists Certificate IV tuition of $597 online or $997 with virtual classes. REAA lists its Certificate IV at $599, full diploma at $799 and diploma upgrade at $499. These are advertised course fees, with optional support and additional enrolment charges considered separately.
For a comparable quote, specify the exact course code and whether it includes live teaching. Have the enrolment agreement identify the tax treatment of extras and the amount due before access begins. Don’t apply a subsidy or expired promotional discount to a standard fee comparison.
Worked Example: A Career Changer With Six Hours a Week
This fictional example uses Priya, a full-time employee who can study for two hours on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, plus two hours on Sunday. She has six hours a week and no lending experience. Over 26 weeks, that gives her 156 planned hours before missed sessions or resubmissions.
Priya can use online lessons in those evening slots, but she needs a separate block to record role plays with another person. AAMC’s daytime virtual classes require leave from work. Their teaching can help her understand the tasks, while the assessment work continues after class.
Kaplan’s stated weekly workload includes learning and assessment time beyond Priya’s six hours. Its ordinary Certificate IV learning and assessment period is 26 weeks. She needs more weekly study time or an approved extension plan before treating that deadline as workable.
Priya compares these completion risks as well as tuition.
| Event | Consequence for Priya’s study plan |
|---|---|
| She needs another attempt | Reserve time to act on assessor feedback and resubmit. An unsuccessful assessment doesn’t earn the qualification. |
| She attempts all Kaplan assessments within the initial period but needs resubmission | Kaplan permits an additional four weeks without a fee under that condition. This is different from extra time to start unfinished tasks. |
| She needs a formal Kaplan extension | Its fee schedule lists $120 for four weeks or $240 for eight weeks. Obtain approval before relying on extra access. |
| Her REAA enrolment expires | Its handbook provides an extension or re-enrolment process. After the two-month grace period, the account closes and only fully completed, competent units receive credit on re-enrolment. |
| She fails a third REAA assessment attempt | A further unit resubmission has a fee and requires the provider’s decision on another attempt. |
Kaplan’s additional fees and REAA’s student handbook explain those conditions. An enrolment window is a deadline, not a promise that any weekly schedule will finish the course.
For Priya, six hours a week makes completion time the deciding issue. She can increase her study hours for a shorter enrolment or choose a course with a workable longer period. An experienced broker with evidence for RPL has a different decision: the assessment of that evidence can remove study they don’t need to repeat.
Check What Comes After Study
Course completion proves the assessed qualification, while mentoring develops practical competence and credit authorisation permits specified activities. Association membership and lender accreditation have separate requirements. A certificate doesn’t guarantee either of them.
ASIC’s credit-representative guidance requires licensees to ensure representatives are trained and competent. It also requires systems to monitor and supervise them. The mortgage broker qualifications guide explains the full entry and authorisation pathway.
After study, a new broker still needs supervised practice in gathering client information and matching it to evidence. They need to apply lender policy to an actual file, assess repayment capacity and explain the recommendation. Preparing an application and handling assessor questions also require practice beyond a classroom role play.
A mortgage broker mentor can review that work and explain why a file needs correction. Bulma can help a broker research lender policies across 52+ lenders, with the policy wording behind each answer. The broker still makes the suitability assessment and keeps responsibility for the recommendation.
Before enrolling, choose the qualification your pathway requires and a delivery option you can finish within its conditions. Reserve time and money for supervised work after graduation, so the course supports your move into broking without implying that the certificate completes it.
