Personal Loan for a Bridging Visa: Eligibility Checks

Can you get a personal loan for a bridging visa? Check visa expiry, loan term, income, car security, documents and current Australian lender rules.

It depends: a personal loan for a bridging-visa holder needs a lender that accepts the exact visa and can support the requested repayment term. Lawful stay, work rights and affordable repayments each need evidence. Car finance has an additional test: whether the vehicle meets the secured-loan rules.

Give the Conditional Eligibility Answer

A bridging visa alone doesn’t establish eligibility for a personal or car loan in Australia. A lender can accept some temporary residents while excluding bridging visas or particular subclasses. Good income and a deposit don’t override that residency rule.

Before discussing a possible application, record the client’s current in-effect visa, bridging-visa subclass and associated substantive visa application. Add the purpose, amount, requested term, work conditions, employment history and existing commitments. For a car purchase, also record the vehicle and the client’s contribution.

Separate three questions in your file assessment.

  1. Does the lender accept this visa for this credit product?
  2. Does the documented stay support the proposed term under that lender’s rule?
  3. Can the client repay the loan from permitted, verified income without hardship?

A positive answer to one question doesn’t settle the others. Describe a possible route as subject to the lender’s assessment, without promising approval.

The word “bridging” describes the client’s immigration status here. Property bridging finance funds a purchase before a property sale and has different eligibility rules.

Verify Visa Status and Timing

Verify the visa that is currently in effect, then read the bridging grant notice for conditions and the event that ends the stay. The Department of Home Affairs’ Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) service shows the current visa and its conditions. It doesn’t show a visa that hasn’t yet come into effect.

For example, a client can have a bridging grant notice while their substantive visa remains in effect. Home Affairs explains that a bridging visa usually takes effect when the substantive visa expires. Until then, the current visa’s conditions apply.

Keep the following details together so the lender can distinguish the current entitlement from a future change.

EvidenceWhat you recordWhy it affects the loan
Passport and current VEVO resultIdentity, subclass, period of stay and current conditionsEstablishes the visa in effect and permitted work
Bridging-visa grant noticeExact subclass, conditions and commencement detailsShows what applies when the bridging visa takes effect
Substantive application acknowledgementVisa applied for and application referenceExplains the application connected to the bridging visa
Decision or review correspondenceRelevant dates and stated effect on the stayIdentifies a timing change the lender needs to assess
Travel details and grant noticeTravel permission and any defined travel periodShows whether intended travel affects the documented stay

Home Affairs states that work permission depends on the conditions attached to the visa. A payslip proves a payment, but doesn’t establish permission to perform the work. Compare the employment being relied on with the current work conditions.

For a Bridging visa B, Home Affairs distinguishes the travel period from the permission to remain in Australia. Its subclass 020 guidance says the visa ceases if the holder is overseas when the specified travel period ends. Record the actual travel permission instead of treating a travel date as the loan’s automatic maturity date.

An event-based stay is different from a guaranteed number of months remaining. Don’t turn an expected processing time or hoped-for visa grant into a repayment term. Refer questions about changing work rights, travel or a review’s immigration consequences to Home Affairs or a registered migration agent.

Separate Car and Personal Loan Structures

Secured car finance uses the purchased vehicle as security, while an unsecured personal loan doesn’t require the car as collateral. Both structures still need an acceptable visa and an affordability assessment. Changing the security doesn’t remove the lender’s residency criteria.

FactorSecured Car LoanUnsecured Personal Loan
PurposePurchase of a vehicle the lender acceptsAn accepted personal purpose, which can include buying a car

Ownership evidencePurchase and registration documents must fit the lender’s borrower and security requirementsKeep purchase evidence where the lender requires it for the stated purpose
TermMust fit residency, repayment and vehicle rulesMust fit residency and repayment rules

As at October 2026, CommBank’s secured car-loan page requires a car ten years old or below, without existing finance and with comprehensive insurance. Those are CommBank’s security conditions, not evidence that a bridging-visa applicant qualifies.

Record whether the car is for personal transport or business use before selecting the product. The intended use can change the appropriate credit structure and regulatory assessment. An older vehicle or a purchase price above the lender’s accepted value can also make a proposed secured structure unsuitable.

An unsecured route can be considered when its purpose and visa rules fit. It isn’t an automatic workaround for a secured-loan decline. A larger contribution can reduce the debt, but it can’t change an excluded visa into an accepted one.

Check Income, Affordability and Credit Evidence

Assess whether the client’s permitted income can cover the proposed repayments after expenses and existing debts. Employment continuity matters alongside the amount received. Record contract end dates, variable hours and any visa condition that restricts the work supporting repayments.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) sets out the responsible lending obligations. Credit licensees must make reasonable enquiries about finances and the client’s requirements and objectives. They must verify the financial situation and assess whether the credit contract is unsuitable.

Include rent, dependants, transport costs and the car’s running costs in the expense assessment. List existing loans, credit-card limits and buy now pay later commitments. Review the credit report for repayment problems or errors that need explanation.

A shorter term raises the regular repayment for the same amount and interest rate. For illustration, repaying $12,000 of principal over 12 months requires $1,000 a month before interest and fees. Over 24 months, the principal component averages $500 a month.

These figures aren’t lender quotes or evidence of eligibility.

Prepare a document pack that matches each fact being assessed.

  • Passport, grant notice, current VEVO result and relevant application or decision correspondence.
  • Identity and address evidence, plus any requested address history.
  • Recent payslips and bank statements showing income credits and spending.
  • Employment contract or employer letter showing commencement, hours and any end date.
  • Tax returns and business evidence where self-employed income is being used.
  • Statements for existing debts and evidence explaining credit-report discrepancies.
  • Vehicle quote or invoice, registration details, seller information and contribution evidence for a car purchase.
  • Insurance evidence and any required security search for a secured vehicle loan.

Obtain the selected lender’s exact document requirements before lodgement. Match those requirements to the client’s employment type and purchase method. A general checklist doesn’t settle the required statement period or the evidence needed for a private sale.

Compare Current Lender Rules

Compare the exact visa subclass against the lender’s personal-loan policy before comparing car security or repayment terms. The published rules below distinguish an express exclusion from a list that doesn’t include bridging visas. They don’t establish a market-wide approval route.

Lender and Source DatePublished Visa RuleTerm or Structure Consequence
CommBank, as at October 2026Its personal-loan document page expressly excludes subclasses 030, 040, 050 and 051For eligible visa holders, visa expiry must be at least one month after the loan term ends
NAB, as at October 2026Its personal-loan application page lists bridging visas among ineligible visa categoriesA shorter term or vehicle contribution doesn’t overcome that published exclusion
Westpac, acceptable-visas document dated 4 October 2024, accessed October 2026Its temporary-residence list includes specified substantive visas and contains no bridging-visa subclassListed temporary visas need more than 12 months remaining. Fixed-rate repayment must finish six months before visa expiry

CommBank’s application evidence page names particular excluded bridging subclasses. The omission of subclass 010 or 020 from that exclusion list isn’t a promise of acceptance. Put the exact in-effect visa and any event-based expiry to the lender before proceeding with a formal application.

NAB’s personal-loan application criteria exclude bridging visas as a category. Its acceptance of some temporary residency visas therefore doesn’t establish a bridging-visa route.

Westpac’s acceptable-visas document lists subclass 820, among other temporary visas. A bridging visa while awaiting a partner-visa decision is distinct from a granted subclass 820 visa. Apply the rule to the visa the client holds, not the visa they hope to receive.

Keep deposit, vehicle and income criteria attached to the specific product. Obtain written confirmation of any case-specific residency decision and the available broker or direct application channel before promising a lodgement route. A broker’s claim to arrange temporary-resident finance doesn’t replace the actual lender’s acceptance of the subclass.

Handle Declines and Timing Risks

A decline can follow an excluded visa, insufficient supported stay, unverified income or repayments the client can’t afford. A vehicle can fail the security criteria even when the borrower passes the initial residency screen. Identify the actual reason before changing the application.

If evidence is incomplete, correct the pack and reconcile mismatched identity, income or vehicle details. If the visa is excluded, another application with the same lender and status won’t resolve that policy barrier. Waiting for a substantive visa decision can change the assessment once the new grant and conditions are available.

Where a shorter term fits the lender’s residency rule, reassess the higher repayment before recommending it. A lower borrowing amount or cheaper vehicle can help affordability, but neither overrides residency policy. Consider another credit structure only when its own visa and purpose rules fit.

For a client who also needs a home loan, use the separate temporary-resident mortgage guide. Mortgage residency and property rules don’t establish car-finance eligibility.

Before lodging, retain the current visa evidence, the lender’s applicable rule and the affordability calculation together. Proceed only when those records support the same product, amount and term. Resolve the reason for a decline before considering a further application.
