A Westpac car loan can fund an eligible new or used vehicle with the car as security, while an unsecured personal loan covers broader purposes. For your client, the choice starts with the amount needed, the car’s eligibility and the total repayment cost. Banking with Westpac helps with application details, but it doesn’t guarantee approval or the cheapest offer.
What Westpac Lends for a Car
Westpac has dedicated secured car loans and an unsecured option for buying a vehicle, as at October 2026. Its personal loan range distinguishes the products by the car’s fuel type and whether the borrower provides security.
| Westpac product | Vehicle or purpose | Security |
|---|---|---|
| Car Loan | Eligible petrol, diesel or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cars | The car |
| Electric Car Loan | Eligible electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) | The car |
| Hybrid Car Loan | Eligible hybrids other than plug-ins | The car |
| Unsecured Personal Loan | Buying or repairing a car, including an older vehicle | No asset pledged |
Westpac’s secured range runs from $10,000 to $130,000 over one to seven years, with fixed rates and no balloon payment. A balloon is a lump sum left to pay at the end. Used cars must be no more than seven years old when the client applies.
The car must also be for personal use, imported by the manufacturer and never written off. Comprehensive insurance must name Westpac as financier. For an electric or hybrid purchase, the exact model must meet the relevant product’s eligibility list.
Vehicle security usually lowers Westpac’s rate compared with its unsecured loan. It also gives Westpac rights over the car if the borrower defaults. The Personal Loan Contract requires written consent before selling the secured car.
Before a sale, arrange the payout and release of security with Westpac. Selling a car bought with an unsecured loan leaves that loan payable, but the car isn’t pledged under that loan.
A direct Westpac loan can pay for a dealer purchase or a private sale. Dealership finance is a separate offer whose contract identifies the lender. Westpac’s 28 June 2021 announcement concerned the historical sale of dealer finance and novated leasing businesses, not the withdrawal of today’s consumer Car Loan.
Westpac Personal Loans and Small Loan Amounts
Westpac’s lowest published personal loan amount is $4,000, as at October 2026. The fixed Unsecured Personal Loan lends $4,000 to $70,000 over one to seven years. Its rate and scheduled repayment stay fixed through the term.
The variable alternative is Flexi Loan, with a $4,000 to $50,000 limit and no set end date. Interest applies to the amount drawn, and repaid funds can be borrowed again within the limit. Minimum repayments alone don’t give the client a fixed date for becoming debt-free.
An unsecured loan can cover renovations, travel, a wedding or debt consolidation. It also suits a vehicle purchase that doesn’t meet the secured car criteria, subject to the borrower’s assessment. Borrowing extra solely to reach the minimum adds debt the client didn’t need.
For a small purchase below the minimum, an existing credit card can cost less if the purchase qualifies for interest-free days and is repaid in full. That comparison changes for a cash advance or an unpaid balance. Include any card fee that the purchase would trigger.
Existing home loan redraw can also cost less when its rate and fees are lower and the amount is repaid promptly. Leaving a modest purchase on a mortgage for decades can erase that saving. Redraw uses debt secured by the home, so compare both total interest and the security risk.
For debt consolidation, compare the new loan’s full cost with paying the existing debts down over the same period. If your client is replacing an existing Westpac personal loan, use the Westpac personal loan refinance guide.
Pre-Approval and the Westpac Application
Westpac has a personalised rate quote and conditional car loan approval, as at October 2026. They serve different purposes. A quote estimates pricing, while conditional approval establishes a borrowing limit subject to the remaining checks.
The personalised rate tool gives an estimated fixed rate and repayment options using the client’s loan details and Equifax credit score. Westpac says getting this rate doesn’t affect the credit score. Submitting the application triggers an Equifax credit check recorded on the credit report.
Westpac’s 1 June 2026 car loan pre-approval guidance says conditional approval usually lasts 30 days. The approval notice states the client’s maximum borrowing amount, term, estimated monthly repayment and expiry date. Final approval still requires the vehicle details and verification of the borrower’s information.
Treat a saved rate estimate as pricing information, not permission to buy unconditionally. If conditional approval expires before the purchase, contact Westpac about an extension before making another application. The car loan pre-approval guide explains how to use conditional finance when shopping.
Eligibility and Documents
For these Westpac loans, the applicant must be at least 18, have a verifiable Australian residential address and receive regular, verifiable Australian taxable income. Westpac accepts Australian or New Zealand citizens and applicants meeting its permanent-resident or acceptable-visa criteria. Its non-resident or migrant category requires at least one year before visa expiry.
The Car Loan also requires a current Australian driver licence or learner’s permit. Westpac recommends before-tax annual income of at least $25,000 for its car and unsecured loans. That recommendation doesn’t replace the assessment of whether income covers living costs and debt repayments.
Prepare identification, income evidence and details of existing loans, card accounts and buy now, pay later commitments. Record regular living expenses and the client’s assets. Westpac’s application checklist specifies acceptable evidence for each income source.
- For employment income, two consecutive payslips must be less than 60 days old. The checklist also permits qualifying bank statements as an alternative.
- A self-employed client needs at least 18 months in business, recent business bank statements and the relevant personal tax notice of assessment.
- Pension and rental income need evidence matching their source and the checklist’s required period.
- Existing customers can have details prefilled. When pay already enters a Westpac account, the bank can use those income records when assessing the application.
Apply and Complete the Purchase
The client can apply online, call 132 651 or visit a Westpac branch. For the direct application below, the broker helps prepare and compare the file while the client submits and accepts the contract.
- Choose the product for the purpose and eligible vehicle. Enter the required amount and a repayment term that fits the client’s budget.
- Submit the client’s financial details and requested documents. Conditional approval leaves document and vehicle checks to complete.
- Supply purchase evidence. A dealer or auction purchase needs the invoice or contract, while a private sale needs registration papers and Westpac’s confirmation of car purchase form.
- Review the final approval and contract. Check the funded amount, repayment schedule and any conditions before acceptance.
- Set the payment instructions for the seller. Westpac’s car contract acceptance process lets the client choose direct transfer or bank cheque and the payment date.
- Confirm the seller receives the agreed funds and the loan’s repayment arrangement is active before treating the purchase as complete.
For an unsecured loan, funds go to the nominated account and the client pays the seller or other supplier. Westpac says it emails approval confirmation within two business days after receiving and verifying documents. A fast conditional response doesn’t establish a settlement date.
If documents are requested, supply the specified evidence before relying on final approval. When the loan remains conditional, keep the purchase subject to the outstanding finance conditions.
Fees, Early Payout and the Real Cost
Westpac’s fixed Car Loan and Unsecured Personal Loan both list a $250 establishment fee and a $15 monthly account fee, as at October 2026. The establishment fee is added to the loan balance, so interest applies to it too. Both allow extra repayments without an extra repayment fee.
Hypothetical Equal-Amount Comparison
Suppose the client needs $30,000 and repays monthly over five years. All amounts are Australian dollars. The hypothetical examples use published median rates checked on 3 October 2026.
The Car Loan calculation uses 8.49% annually, and the Unsecured Personal Loan uses 16.99%. Neither rate is a quote for this client.
Each loan finances $30,250 after adding the establishment fee. The estimate uses monthly amortisation at the annual rate divided by 12. It excludes missed payments, bank cheque fees and early payout, and assumes the full term is completed.
| Cost over 60 months | Westpac Car Loan | Westpac Unsecured Personal Loan |
|---|---|---|
| Amount available for the purchase | $30,000 | $30,000 |
| Financed establishment fee | $250 | $250 |
| Interest on $30,250 | $6,978.76 | $14,847.67 |
| Monthly principal and interest | $620.48 | $751.63 |
| Monthly payment including account fee | $635.48 | $766.63 |
| Account fees over five years | $900 | $900 |
| Total repayable including fees | $38,128.76 | $45,997.67 |
Totals use unrounded amortisation figures, so multiplying the displayed rounded payment can give a small rounding difference. Actual contracts calculate interest and payment dates under their own terms. Here, securing the same purchase saves about $7,869, but it requires an eligible vehicle and gives Westpac security over it.
Extra Repayments and Payout
Westpac lists a $175 prepayment fee when a fixed loan’s original term exceeds two years and it is paid out in under two years. Westpac waives that fee when refinancing to another Westpac personal loan. An extra payment that doesn’t close the loan is different from an early payout that meets those conditions.
Flexi Loan is variable and has no early repayment fee. Its establishment fee is $150, with a $12 account fee in months the account is used or has a balance owing. Paying down the balance reduces interest, but close an unwanted facility explicitly rather than assuming a zero balance closes it.
Where Other Lenders Compete With Westpac
Other lenders can beat Westpac on total cost or fit a client whose vehicle or income falls outside Westpac’s standard criteria. Keep the net purchase amount, term and repayment frequency identical in the comparison. Add financed fees, ongoing charges and any final balloon to each offer.
As at October 2026, Great Southern Bank’s Secured Fixed Car Loan has no monthly fee or early payout penalty. Its published establishment fee waiver runs to 23 February 2027, subject to its terms. The bank can withdraw or amend the offer.
Westpac’s fixed car fee comparison uses the $250 establishment fee and $15 monthly charge listed as at October 2026.
For the same hypothetical $30,000 purchase and five-year term, assume both banks approve an 8.49% rate. With Great Southern Bank’s waiver, the client finances $30,000 and repays approximately $36,921.08 over the term. The $1,207.68 saving comes from account fees, the financed establishment fee and interest on that fee.
The equal-rate assumption isolates fees. It isn’t a promised Great Southern Bank rate or an approval result. A different personalised rate can change the result, so use the client’s written offers for the final comparison.
A recent self-employed client might need a lender accepting a shorter trading history than Westpac’s 18-month requirement. A default on file needs a lender that considers that credit history, and an older car needs an acceptable vehicle-age policy. These are reasons to shortlist specialist lenders, not grounds to assume approval.
As at October 2026, Finance One’s car loan information includes consideration of defaults, self-employed applicants and older or second-hand cars. Its assessment still considers regular income and repayment capacity. Keep its quoted costs beside the bank offers before deciding whether that broader assessment route justifies the cost.
For further bank comparisons, use the NAB personal loan guide and St.George car finance guide. If your client also plans a mortgage, assess that separate borrowing against Westpac’s home loan policy.
Record the chosen lender’s vehicle eligibility, accepted income evidence and full repayment cost in the file. Explain why the selected offer meets the client’s purchase and repayment needs better than the alternatives considered. Keep the quote and conditions with that explanation before the client accepts the loan.
