Vehicle Value and Duty Bands

Car stamp duty is a tax on registering or transferring a vehicle. The amount depends on the jurisdiction, dutiable value and vehicle category. This calculator covers all eight states and territories for transactions within the 2026–27 financial year.

Dutiable value is the amount the authority taxes. Enter the full value before subtracting a trade-in, deposit or loan. For a used car, several jurisdictions use the higher of the purchase price and market value. A gift can still have a taxable market value unless an exemption applies.

For example, a used South Australian passenger car with a $40,000 dutiable value attracts $1,540 duty. The calculation is $60 plus $4 for each $100 over $3,000.

Entering $800 for registration and $20.50 for transfer keeps duty at $1,540 and adds $820.50 of separate costs. The additional purchase costs total about $2,361.

Duty bands work differently across jurisdictions. Queensland's higher light-vehicle rate applies to the full value above its threshold. New South Wales applies its higher passenger rate only to the excess. Western Australia first rounds its middle-band percentage, then rounds duty down to five cents. Other schedules round each taxable $100 or $200 unit up.

State Rules for New and Used Cars

Select the jurisdiction where you register or transfer the car. New or used status changes the Victorian non-passenger rate, Tasmanian fleet treatment and Australian Capital Territory emissions rules. Each authority also defines which charges belong in the dutiable value.

JurisdictionValue basis and ordinary duty rules
New South WalesNew cars use the amount paid including goods and services tax (GST). Used cars use the higher sale price or market value. Passenger duty is $3 per $100 up to $45,000, then $1,350 plus $5 per $100 of the excess. Other supported categories remain at $3 per $100.
VictoriaUse the higher purchase price or market value. Ordinary passenger rates are $8.40, $10.40, $14 or $18 per $200 of the full value, with thresholds at $80,809, $100,000 and $150,000. Green and qualifying primary producer cars use $8.40. New non-passenger vehicles use $5.40; used ones use $8.40.
QueenslandNew vehicles use the relevant list-price basis; used vehicles use the applicable purchase or market value. Electric and hybrid light vehicles pay $2 per $100 up to $100,000, then $4 on the full value. Other engines start at $3 to $4, rising by $2 above that threshold. Heavy vehicles retain the lower rates.
Western AustraliaNew cars use the manufacturer-fixed retail selling price and relevant options. Used cars use the applicable market value, including a higher sale price where required. Non-heavy duty is 2.75% up to $25,000, a value-dependent rate up to $50,000 and 6.5% above. Heavy-vehicle duty is 3%, capped at $12,000.
South AustraliaNew vehicles follow the manufacturer-fixed price rules. Used vehicles use the higher sale price or market value. Non-commercial duty rises through $1, $2 and $3 per $100 before $60 plus $4 per $100 over $3,000. Commercial duty stops rising at $30 plus $3 per $100 over $2,000. Minimum duty is $5.
TasmaniaNew vehicles use the purchase price including relevant delivery and fitted accessories. Used vehicles use the highest applicable purchase or market value. Passenger duty has a $20 minimum, a $3 per $100 band, an $11 excess band from $35,000 to $40,000 and 4% above $40,000. Fleet discounts and non-passenger categories have separate rates.
Australian Capital TerritoryUse the higher purchase price or market value, including applicable taxes. Registration date selects the schedule. New passenger and light commercial vehicles use emissions bands; most used non-zero-emission vehicles share one schedule. The calculator also distinguishes motorcycles and heavy goods vehicles.
Northern TerritoryOrdinary commercial sales use the sale price including relevant accessories and delivery. Other transactions can use market value. Standard duty is $3 per $100. Eligible battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles receive up to $1,500 relief within the concession period. Ordinary hybrids and hydrogen fuel cells do not qualify for that concession.

The official schedules explain the applicable categories and value rules for New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia.

Use the corresponding official rules for South Australia, Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory. Tasmania's dutiable-value rules and RevenueSA's new-vehicle value guidance explain included charges.

For emissions, use the combined tailpipe carbon dioxide figure from the Green Vehicle Guide or manufacturer. A Victorian green passenger car emits no more than 120 grams per kilometre. The Australian Capital Territory has more bands and uses your registration date to apply the relevant schedule.

Duty, Registration and Transfer Fees

The duty result contains only the calculated vehicle tax. Registration and transfer fees remain separate entries. Enter the amounts from the registration quote or transfer paperwork, including compulsory insurance only if it belongs in your registration budget.

Lawful exemptions depend on the transfer and the jurisdiction. Select confirmed exempt only when your circumstances qualify and you hold the required evidence. A reduced sale price or inaccurate declaration does not establish an exemption.

JurisdictionExamples and evidence
New South WalesEligible same-owner interstate registrations, relationship settlements and some estate transfers can qualify. The authority lists the registration, court or estate documents required.
VictoriaSpouse or domestic partner transfers and eligible estates can qualify. Green and qualifying primary producer passenger cars receive the category rate calculated above. Relationship and vehicle evidence must support the claim.
QueenslandSome genuine gifts to defined relatives qualify. Sibling gifts are excluded from that family-gift exemption. Other relief includes eligible estate and interstate transfers. Seniors concessions on registration do not create a duty exemption.
Western AustraliaQualifying spouse or de facto transfers can be exempt. Certain estate or relationship-breakdown transfers attract $20 nominal duty and require their specific documents. Nominal-duty cases need a separate authority assessment.
South AustraliaEligible spouse or de facto transfers, same-owner interstate registrations and inherited vehicles can qualify. A gift to another family member does not itself remove duty. Retain the relationship, registration or estate evidence.
TasmaniaEligible relationship settlements, estates and certain disability or charity circumstances have specific conditions. Some exemptions require State Revenue Office approval. Keep the approval and supporting documents.
Australian Capital TerritoryEligible same-owner interstate transfers and some estate or charity transfers can qualify. New and used zero-emission vehicles still have a duty schedule, so zero emissions alone does not mean exemption.
Northern TerritoryEligible gifts between specified family members and some same-owner transfers qualify with evidence. Plug-in relief requires the correct vehicle record and an eligible transaction within the official concession period.

The authority's application instructions identify the evidence for New South Wales exemptions, Victorian exemptions, Queensland relief and Western Australian spouse transfers.

Application rules also cover South Australian exemptions, Tasmanian exemptions, Australian Capital Territory relief and Northern Territory exemptions. The Northern Territory plug-in concession has its own vehicle and timing conditions.

Keep the value evidence and any exemption documents with the purchase budget. Use the calculated duty and separate fees when deciding how much cash or finance the vehicle purchase requires.
