What the Validation Result Means
ABN validation checks an Australian business number’s 11-digit format and arithmetic consistency. A pass means its digits satisfy the checksum formula. It does not establish that the number exists, remains active or belongs to your client.
The format result accepts 11 digits after spaces are removed. Missing digits, extra digits and unsupported characters produce a field error. The check-digit result then reports whether the number passes the calculation.
If an entry fails, compare every digit with the original client evidence. The ABN validator cannot identify the incorrect digit. Changing the check digits to force a pass could produce someone else’s number.
Your entry stays in this page. The tool performs no registry request and does not upload or save the number between visits.
How the ABN Check Digit Works
The official ABN format guidance specifies two leading check digits and a modulus 89 calculation. ABN number validation uses every digit, including any leading zero.
- Subtract 1 from the first digit.
- Multiply the adjusted first digit by 10. Multiply the remaining digits by 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19 in order.
- Add the 11 products and divide the total by 89.
- A zero remainder passes the checksum. Any other remainder fails.
The tool opens on ABN Lookup’s published example, 51 824 753 556. Adjusting the first digit gives 4.
The weighted total is 534, which divides by 89 exactly six times. Changing the final digit to 7 gives 553 and a remainder of 19, so 51 824 753 557 fails.
| Entry | Outcome |
|---|---|
| 51824753556 or 51 824 753 556 | Accepted format and passing checksum |
| 51 824 753 557 | Accepted format, failing checksum |
| 51 824 753 55 | Too short: enter all 11 digits |
| 51 824 753 5560 | Too long: compare with the source |
| 51 824 753 55O | Letter O is rejected |
| 51-824-753-556 | Hyphens are rejected |
Spaces affect presentation only. The displayed number uses groups of two, three, three and three digits. The field keeps your entry unchanged and never pads, truncates or replaces its digits.
Before You Use the Number in a Client File
Use ABN Lookup after the local check whenever the client file needs current Australian Business Register details. Search the complete number, then compare the entity name with the client’s evidence. Check whether the ABN is active or cancelled and whether it is registered for goods and services tax (GST).
A trading or business name can differ from the entity name. ABN Lookup’s search guidance explains those name types and how to open the current details. Resolve a mismatch with the client before using the number in the file.
A passing checksum supplies no income evidence or tax eligibility. Keep the registry result with the relevant client documents and apply the lender’s evidence requirements separately.
