Personal Loan Pre-Approval: Conditions and Next Steps
Need a personal loan pre-approval before committing to a purchase? Check online decisions, credit enquiries and the conditions still to clear.

Personal loan pre-approval is a conditional lending decision, with checks still to complete before the client can rely on the money. As the broker, identify what the lender has assessed, clear the written conditions and confirm funds are available before treating a purchase as financed.
Getting personal loan pre-approval online changes how the client applies. The lender’s decision wording still determines whether the result is a quote, conditional approval or a final offer.
What Personal Loan Pre-Approval Actually Confirms
A conditional approval confirms the lender is prepared to proceed subject to its stated conditions. Read those conditions alongside the information used in the application. A declared salary can inform an initial decision while proof of that salary remains outstanding.
Westpac says its personal loan assessment considers the applicant’s circumstances, income, expenses and existing debts. Its conditional-approval checklist explains that the decision email identifies the information needed to finalise the application. Income or identity verification can therefore remain after a positive online result.
| Result | What it tells the client | What to establish next |
|---|---|---|
| Repayment estimate | A calculation using the amount, term and rate entered | Whether a lender will approve those inputs |
| Personalised rate or quote | An estimated rate and repayments based on the provider’s specified information | Whether the client has submitted an application and received a lending decision |
| Conditional approval or pre-approval | The lender has given a positive decision subject to conditions | Which facts are verified and which checks remain |
| Final approval and loan offer | The lender has approved the loan on the final written terms | How the client accepts the documents and what is required for disbursement |
| Funds available | The lender has paid the agreed recipient and the money can be used for the agreed purpose | Whether the available amount covers the purchase or payment |
Westpac’s personalised-rate route gives an estimated fixed rate and repayment options before application. Westpac explicitly says this does not guarantee approval. Keep the lender’s actual label in your file rather than relabelling that quote as pre-approval.
Ask the lender to identify any remaining income, credit, identity or loan-purpose checks for this application. A document request shows what is outstanding. It does not establish that every other part of the application is complete.
Prepare the Evidence Before Applying
Prepare one consistent application from the client’s current circumstances before submitting it to the chosen lender.
- Confirm the requested amount and purpose. Retain a purchase quote or other purpose evidence where the lender requires it. Separate money the client needs to spend from any fees added to the loan.
- Match identity and employment details to the supporting records. Gather the lender’s required identification, income evidence and employment information, including any recent job or hours change.
- Reconcile the budget with existing debts and expenses. Include credit limits as well as balances where requested, and record the proposed repayment frequency. Use a personal loan calculator to test estimates against the budget before relying on a lender offer.
- Establish the credit-enquiry step and obtain the client’s relevant application and information-sharing consent before submission. Record the lender, route and amount authorised, including any credit-reporting notice the client accepts.
Document rules belong to the selected lender. For example, Westpac asks employed applicants for their two most recent consecutive payslips, less than 60 days old, with specified income and employer details. Follow its alternative-document instructions when those payslips do not contain the required information.
National Australia Bank’s application help asks for accurate debts and expenses. It says differences between the application and credit report or other information can need clarification before finalisation. Resolve a known discrepancy before submitting the file.
A no-score-impact quote and a full application have different consequences. Westpac says obtaining its personalised rate does not affect the credit score. If the client proceeds to submit an application, Equifax carries out a credit check that is recorded on the credit report.
Comparing personal loan lenders and their available terms does not require lodging several full applications. Moneysmart explains that the number of credit applications contributes to a credit score. Identify what each proposed submission does before seeking the client’s consent.
Read the Offer and Track Its Conditions
Create a condition record from the written decision, keeping proposed terms separate from terms the lender has finally approved.
| Record | Details to retain |
|---|---|
| Decision and application | Lender, product, application reference and exact decision wording |
| Amount and purpose | Requested amount, amount offered, financed fees and expected net funds |
| Repayment basis | Interest rate, fixed or variable basis, repayment amount and frequency |
| Term and costs | Loan term, establishment and ongoing fees, total payable and relevant early-repayment charges |
| Validity | Offer expiry and deadlines for accepting or supplying documents |
| Outstanding conditions | For each condition, the document needed and who will supply it. Retain lender confirmation when satisfied. |
Use the validity stated in this offer. A saved quote’s availability and a conditional approval’s expiry are separate questions. If the decision omits an expiry or leaves a condition unclear, get the answer from the lender against the application reference before relying on it.
Providers also use different sequences. Plenti’s personal loan process separates a rate estimate from the application, document assessment and funding after approval and acceptance. Its calculator is indicative, and the amount and repayment can change after the full application.
Do not promise a separate pre-approval stage merely because another lender uses one.
Consider this hypothetical client. Sam seeks $20,000 for renovations and receives an online conditional decision using declared take-home pay of $7,000 a month. Before income verification finishes, Sam reduces working hours and take-home pay falls to $5,600 a month.
Return the changed hours, revised income and effective timing to the lender with updated evidence. Rework Sam’s budget using the lower income, including existing debts and the proposed loan repayment. Ask the lender to reassess the amount and conditions against those facts before Sam relies on the earlier decision.
Incorrect: tell Sam the original $20,000 is available because the screen showed conditional approval. Correct: explain that the income used in that decision has changed and await the lender’s revised written outcome.
Move From Conditional Approval to Funding
Move to funding only after the lender confirms the required verification is complete and the client accepts the final loan terms.
- Submit the requested evidence through the lender’s nominated channel. Retain the receipt and follow up until the lender confirms that each outstanding condition is satisfied. An upload receipt alone proves delivery of a document.
- Review the final approval and offer with the client. Match the amount, purpose, term, repayment and fees to the agreed budget. The observable result is the current written offer for the loan the client intends to accept.
- Have the client sign or electronically accept the required loan documents through the lender’s process. Retain confirmation that the lender has received the accepted agreement, together with any remaining payment instructions.
- Confirm disbursement and availability. Match the actual amount and recipient to the agreed purpose, including any fees deducted or debts paid directly. Record the bank credit or lender payment confirmation and resolve any shortfall or pending transfer before the client commits the money.
Approval time and funding time measure different events. Plenti says funds can arrive in as little as 24 hours after approval and acceptance. Use the lender’s actual payment status when planning the client’s purchase.
For an unsecured renovation loan paid to the client, check the available account balance against the required renovation payment. For debt consolidation, reconcile lender payments to the intended creditors and establish whether any balance remains. A loan balance appearing in online banking does not, by itself, prove the intended recipient has usable funds.
Handle Expiry, a Reduced Offer or a Decline
Identify why the original application cannot proceed before requesting a different amount or another assessment.
| Outcome | Check first | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Offer expires | Whether the documents remain outstanding and whether borrower circumstances have changed | Ask whether the lender can extend the existing application or requires reassessment. Obtain the revised validity and conditions in writing. |
| Amount is reduced | The lender’s reason, the revised repayments and the gap against the client’s purpose | Rework the budget and purchase amount. Ask for reassessment only with evidence that addresses the reason for the lower offer. |
| Application is declined | The reason given, factual errors and any change in income or commitments | Address the cause before another submission. Establish whether the lender can review the existing decision. |
Moneysmart’s loan-rejection guidance recommends finding out why the application failed before applying again. A different lender’s application does not correct an error in the first file or remove existing enquiries.
If a credit report contains a wrong balance or an account belonging to someone else, request a correction with supporting records. Moneysmart’s credit-repair guidance says the client can contact the lender or credit reporting agency and have errors fixed for free. Accurate negative information cannot be removed merely because it affects approval.
Keep a correction request separate from authority to make a new application. Record the corrected facts, revised budget and client’s chosen next step. Before requesting an extension, revised offer or fresh application, establish what further assessment or enquiry the lender will perform and obtain the consent that action needs.
