HSBC Personal Loans: Current Status and Servicing
Check HSBC unsecured personal loans in Australia, current application availability and the official servicing notice before discussing an existing account.

HSBC personal loans are closed to new applications in Australia as at October 2026. Existing borrowers continue with HSBC while the announced portfolio sale awaits regulatory approval. Pepper Money is expected to take over servicing in the first half of 2027.
HSBC’s current loans page confirms the application closure.
A retail banking exit does not require an existing borrower to refinance. Keep meeting the current loan obligations and use the borrower’s written notices to identify when account management changes.
Check New-Loan Availability
HSBC’s 12 August 2026 personal-loan FAQ confirms that it has stopped reviewing and approving personal-loan applications. It also says pending applications have been withdrawn.
HSBC says it will remove the credit bureau enquiries for those withdrawn applications, allowing up to 30 days for removal. Read HSBC’s personal-loan FAQ.
The older HSBC unsecured personal-loan product page still describes borrowing features and displays historical rates. Those details do not override the explicit closure notice or establish an available offer. Do not quote them as current new-loan terms.
HSBC’s target market determination index lists the personal-loan document covering 23 September 2025 to 31 July 2026 under inactive determinations. A target market determination describes the customers and distribution conditions for a product. Its continued availability as a document does not reopen applications.
For a withdrawn application, retain the withdrawal notice and check the borrower’s credit report after HSBC’s stated removal period. Take an enquiry that remains to HSBC with the application reference and report entry.
Understand the Portfolio Transition
HSBC’s 31 July 2026 announcement describes an agreed sale of its Australian home and personal-loan portfolio to Blackstone. Pepper Money will service the portfolio after completion.
The sale is expected to complete in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals. HSBC’s sale announcement distinguishes the buyer from the servicer.
Servicing means handling the account’s day-to-day operation, including repayment administration and account enquiries. An announced future servicing role does not make Pepper Money the current contact for an HSBC account.
The personal-loan communication dated 12 August 2026 says existing terms and conditions continue for now. It says the borrower’s interest rate and fees will transfer over to Pepper Money.
HSBC will explain the account-management arrangements before transfer. Read the customer communication.
HSBC’s personal-loan FAQ says written updates will give the expected transfer date and any required steps. After transfer, Pepper Money’s welcome pack will confirm the change and explain account access. Until the borrower receives the applicable transfer instructions, retain the current repayment arrangements.
Support an Existing Account
HSBC’s 12 August 2026 personal-loan communication keeps HSBC’s app, online banking and customer service available during the transition. It lists 1300 308 008, or +61 2 9005 8220 from overseas, for customer support. Use the official HSBC contact page for the available contact options.
The borrower’s loan contract, applicable terms and subsequent written changes govern the account’s present obligations. Keep the repayment amount and due date from the account records beside the latest customer notice. The general sale announcement does not cancel the debt or replace the borrower’s agreed payment schedule.
For repayment difficulty, HSBC’s money-worries page, as at October 2026, provides a hardship application through online banking. Its Customer Assist team is on 1300 555 988, or +61 2 8661 1902 from overseas. Contact the team when a payment is at risk, rather than waiting for the transfer.
The August customer communication says an existing hardship arrangement remains unchanged. Retain the arrangement’s written terms and tell HSBC about a further change in the borrower’s circumstances. A broker acting for the borrower must use HSBC’s required authority process before discussing protected account information.
For residential mortgage questions, use the separate HSBC home-loan policy guide. The HSBC broker access guide covers broker entry points.
Assess an Alternative Loan
Assess a replacement personal loan against the borrower’s purpose and existing debt, because HSBC’s application closure does not establish a reason to replace an existing account. Record the outstanding balance, remaining term, current payment and ongoing fees. Obtain a payout figure for the intended settlement date so accrued interest and any closure charge are included.
HSBC’s 12 August 2026 FAQ warns that an early payout fee might apply when more than six months remain and the loan closes before transfer. Use the borrower’s contract and payout figure for the actual charge.
Compare the cost of keeping the loan with the cost of replacing it from the same date. The existing-loan side includes all remaining repayments and fees. The replacement side includes the new repayments, establishment and ongoing fees, plus any old-loan payout charge paid separately.
Avoid counting a fee twice when it is financed into the new balance.
Separate extra cash borrowing from refinancing the existing balance. Otherwise, a larger replacement loan can obscure whether changing lenders reduces the cost of the original debt. Compare the same remaining term first, then show any proposed extension separately.
Moneysmart’s personal-loan guidance explains that a longer term can reduce repayments while increasing total cost. Its refinancing guidance also warns about putting unsecured debt against an asset. A lower monthly payment alone does not prove a saving or justify exposing an asset to repossession.
A replacement application can appear on the borrower’s credit report, and the new lender assesses the borrower’s current finances. Moneysmart explains credit application records. Check whether a quote involves a credit enquiry before proceeding, and avoid multiple applications made only to test availability.
Document the Status Check
Record the HSBC source date, document version and the account-specific question that needs an answer. For an October 2026 file, the official notices index lists the personal-loan FAQ and customer communication dated 12 August 2026. Save the relevant notice with the borrower’s contract and latest statement.
Keep the file note specific. Record whether it concerns a withdrawn application, repayment instructions, hardship or a payout charge. Write the exact question, such as whether a quoted payout includes the applicable early termination fee, and retain HSBC’s response and reference number.
Before transfer, direct an unresolved account question to HSBC. Move the support request to Pepper Money only after the borrower’s official transfer notice or welcome pack confirms responsibility has changed. Verify any unexpected request to change payment details through the official contact channel before acting.
